Comprehending the real devil in disguise: India Quota system

Our country has achieved much glory and has completed various feats over many years, that too in a consistent manner. India is known as a superpower or at least a fast developing superpower that has to make a lot of serious decisions in the global level. Everyone in the world thinks and believes that the Indian population is competent enough and has some unique qualities in them, but the case is otherwise here in our country. India is the only country in the world where mass protests are organized by various sections of the society asking the government and the authorities to list them as backward and weak in comparison to others. The reservation system was introduced at the time our constitution was being created and the social structure and conditions were very different and the division between the wealthy and poor was large, but Indians are actually pretty good at reaping full benefits from anything. India still has the reservation system as it has been flourished in full valor and politicians in our nation have been using quota as a tool of aggressive electoral enlistment. The Gujjar community took benefits recently when Rajasthan leaders supported them due to selfish motives of increasing vote banks in the locality. The reservation system deployed in India is a failed entity as it seems to encourage caste based differences to prevail in the society where it rather should have diluted them in the first place. Some social groups in our country who are not needy continue to seek reservation system’s protective shield.

The quota system can be seen in various sectors and fields ranging from general admissions to civil services and the general category has turned as the new backward and apparently the weakest class of today’s advanced India. When first thought of, the reservation system was meant to correctly provide services and features to the sections of the society who were not well to do and faced problems in making their ends meet. This has failed so drastically that more and more groups are taking an initiative in validating their backwardness to the government. The quota given to individuals need to be checked under certain conditions like the actual economic status of the applicant, even if our politicians include this little change in the constitution major changes would be witnessed. Reservation system needs to be checked by a centralized body or a committee who make it sure that no wrong is done in providing quota percentages.

The underprivileged people in our country have been leading their lives under a constant sense of powerlessness and they also have low self esteem precisely because of the manner in which they have been treated by the society as a collective who can be easily manipulated by the selfishness of our leaders for political gain. The backwards in the society are seen as a group rather than as individual citizens with distinct entities and personalities. Anyone who thinks that they should be preferred over others just because of their caste actually proves the fact that they feel difficulty in competing with others as they accept themselves of being weak and downtrodden than others. But there are some fields still prevailing in India where quota and caste based reservation hold no role at all. The Military of India is one such institution which has not implemented reservations while giving employment and the result of this could be seen in the fact that the Indian army is one of the strongest and well reputed in the world and consists of officials who work selflessly for the nation irrespective of their caste, race, creed or gender.

The present situation of the reservation system in our country is dilapidated as it has not been given the level of importance it truly deserves. What it is doing currently is dividing and differentiating the innocent and gullible population in our country into believing that they should be given additional benefits based on their race and creed, no one believes in the fact that everybody is equal. Dividing the country in the name of caste and religion labels the citizens with tags which are created by the society and develops a sense of insecurity amongst the people. Our country is in desperate need of revamping of the reservation system so that actually deserving individuals get the benefits which they deserve.
